September 2015 Action Item

Sports can be inspiring, entertaining, and profitable—but not for the approximately 1,200 migrant workers who have died in Qatar from dangerous, inhumane working and living conditions in construction projects in preparations for the 2022 World Cup that is scheduled to be held there. We are joining with Amnesty International and others to call on FIFA to ensure that Qatar and all host cities ensure that such an internationally celebrated event is not accomplished at the cost of human lives.

Suggested points:

State that you are aware there are grave reports from numerous impartial sources indicating that more than 1,000 lives have been lost in work projects related to preparations for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Indicate that you are aware that these workers were promised fair wages and good conditions, neither of which has turned out to be the case. Indicate that the gross and inhumane exploitation of migrant workers—many of whom are trapped in slave-like conditions with their passports confiscated—is completely unacceptable.

Urge FIFA to use its influence to ensure the government of Qatar will take swift and effective action to ensure all workers are treated with basic humanity, given the wages they were promised, and that no more lives will be lost on behalf of a sporting event.
