September 2011 Action Item
While we have watched recently along with the world, ever hopeful, the toppling of some brutal regimes around the globe, such as in Egypt and Libya, we also are greatly concerned that democracy and religious freedom be secured for the populations of these countries.
It is imperative that the U.S. use its influence to advocate for religious freedom around that world, and to that end, the House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed, H.R. 440, "Near East and South Central Asia Religious Freedom Act of 2011." Now it has moved to the Senate, and we must not miss this vital opportunity to urge them to follow suit and pass S.1245.
Write to your senators today!
-
Express your hopefulness as brutal regimes have been removed from power.
Express your concern about the power vacuum these power shifts have caused, and how they have left religious minorities and other populations at risk if extreme factions take control of the government.
Also remind them that even in nations with currently stable governments, who allegedly support religious freedom, such as Pakistan, the reality is that religious minorities and even moderate Muslims are at risk--as was evidenced by the assassination of the Punjab governor, Salman Taseer, and the even more recent abduction of his son, Shahbaz Taseer. This was following the abduction of a 70-year-old, American aid expert, Warren Weinstein.
Urge that your senator to support S.1245 "Near East and South Central Asia Religious Freedom Act of 2011."
