May 2025 Action
Even as our country makes attempts to address the regulation of our borders, we are also a country built on due process, especially those seeking asylum. We also are signatories of 1967 Protocol Relating to the Status of Refugees, international legislation that recognizes the universal human rights of all people and the legal right of any individual to approach and cross another country’s border when they are fleeing persecution based on their race/ethnicity, religion, nationality, membership in a certain social group, political opinion. Internationally, citizens of the United States also are protected by these laws. In the sweeping deportations of recent days, many of those who have been detained and deported are actually persecuted individuals who have followed appropriate, legal processes to seek asylum in the United States. Write to your legislator today indicating that you value the protection of asylum-seekers and being a citizen of a country that adheres to due process. This paragraph can be used as a guide for your letter.
