June 2012 Action Item
Act!
In Syria, over 9,000 people are dead due to the repressive atrocities committed by the government against its own population. The international community has been largely ineffective in persuading the Syrian government to cease the violence it is carrying out against its people. The UN Security Council has also had little success in implementing any kind of plan to establish peace in the region. This is due primarily, because Russia, a prime ally of Syria, has blocked Security Council measures and continued to sell arms to Syria to use against its own citizenry. Write to President Vladimir Putin today asking Russia to change course, condemn the actions of the Assad regime, and use its influence with Syria in an effort to bring peace to this volatile situation.
WRITE TO:
President Vladimir Putin
23, Ilyinka Street
Moscow, 103132
RUSSIA
Suggested points:
- Express your outrage at the brutal response the Syrian government has had to its population exercising its right to freedom of expression and dissent. Nearly 10,000 civilians have lost their lives merely trying to exercise these rights.
- Indicate your confusion and distress that Russia has not used its powerful influence with its ally Syria to bring about resolution to this violent situation. Express also your dismay that Russia has not been fully supportive of the UN Security Council's efforts to condemn the actions of the Syrian government.
- Respectfully urge President Putin to use the power of his position to ensure that Russian exerts its great influence to have Syria comply with the six-point peace plan outlined by the UN Security Council. Also urge that Russia immediately cease selling arms to Syria, which is has been using to massacre its own people.
