August 2021 Action
Because of the unrest in Tigray, the Ethiopian government appears to be targeting innocent civilians of Tigray origin in mass arrests and detentions in what appears to be be ethnically motivated harassment. Many have witnessed scenes of mass arrests, beatings, and police stations full of Tigrayans. Family and friends have not been told the whereabouts of those who have been arrested, and they have not been allowed to seek legal assistance. This is illegal and troubling, especially in light of the violent conflict in the region. Call on Prime Minister Abiy to act justly and without repression!

Suggested points:
- Express your deep concern at hearing reports of mass arrests of civilians of Tigray origin in Addis Ababa
- Indicate that you are aware that thus far no internationally recognized crime has been identified to justify these arrests, and in fact, they appear to be ethnically and religiously motivated
- Remind the prime minister that Ethiopian law requires that those arrested must be brought to court for review of the grounds for arrest within 48 hours, and these many arbitrary and indefinite detentions violate Ethiopian and international laws and standards
- Also indicate that they must reveal the whereabouts of detainees to their families and lawyers. Not disclosing the fate or whereabouts of detainees is committing the crime of enforced disappearance
- Call on the prime minister and his government to refrain from using repressive tactics, and instead use the privilege and power of his office to protect all citizens and to establish a peaceful resolution to this conflict
