September 2014 Action Item

Untold numbers of girls around the world are never registered at birth, so they never receive any documentation for their identity. Without a birth certificate, it can be impossible for them to attend school, get a job, or receive medical or social services. Millions of girls are invisible, confined to a life of poverty. Advocate on behalf of these girls around the world by writing to your senators, urging them to sign the Girls Count Act which would require developing nations to register and record girls' births.

--express your concern that millions of girls around the world are so undervalued that their existence is not even recognized legally with something as simple as a birth certificate.

--express that you were especially troubled that because of this, they can be deprived of basic but essential human rights such as education, employment, or medical care.

--indicate that as a member of a civil society you find it unacceptable that huge portions of the world's population do not share these rights and protections simply because of their gender.

--therefore, as a constituent you respectfully but strongly urge them to sign the Girls Count Act, requiring all nations to register and record the births of all the children in their country, girls and boys alike.

Act!
