August 2018 Action Item

Imran Ghafur Masih has been in prison in Pakistan nearly as long as Asia Bibi, and he is facing a life sentence after a neighbor accused him of blasphemy when some pages of an Islamic book got into his Imran’s trash fire. Additionally, he was fined over $1,000. Clearly this is an inappropriate punishment even if Imran had actually done the crime. Write to the president of Pakistan today calling for Imran Ghafur Masih’s immediate and unconditional release.

Write to:

President Mamnoon Hussain
President's Secretariat
Aiwan-e-Sadr

Suggested points:

  • Indicate that you are writing to express your deep concern over the situation of Imran Ghafur Masih, who is serving a life sentence for allegedly allowing some pages from an Islamic book to get into his fire.
  • Explain that you believe this to be an unreasonably harsh sentence, and that he has certainly been punished enough for this alleged offense.
  • Call for the immediate and unconditional release of Imran Ghafur Masih, a peaceable citizen and businessman and family man. Also urge the government of Pakistan to move toward increased religious freedom, a mark of a civil and just society.
