January 2019 Action Item

This past spring, Brazillian human rights defender and popular city councilor Marielle Franco was shot dead in her car, along with her driver, Anderson Pedro Gomes. Evidence indicates the executioners were professionals and the bullets used were those used by the Brazilian Federal Police. Franco’s work routinely had her speaking out for the poorest and most vulnerable in her community and country, an incredibly brave thing to do in Brazil, which continues to be one of the deadliest places on the globe to be a human rights activist. Despite her impeccable reputation for integrity and justice, the Brazilian government has failed to investigate the murders of her and her driver, let alone bring the perpetrators to justice. Write today to the president of Brazil demanding that this is done and soon! Use the sample letter below from Amnesty International to direct your own message to the president.

Write to:

President Jair Bolsonaro
Praça dos Três Poderes, Palácio do Planalto
Brasília (DF)
Brazil

Sample letter (but feel free to personalize):

Dear President Bolsonaro,

Today, I demand that you ensure a prompt, thorough, impartial and independent investigation into the killing of human rights defender Marielle Franco. This must identify both the shooters and the people who ordered her killing, as well as the motivation for the crime. All those responsible must be brought to justice through a fair trial that meets international standards. I also urge you to take all necessary measures to prevent further threats and attacks against human rights defenders like Marielle, including by restoring the programme of protection for human rights defenders in Brazil.

Respectfully yours,
